Travel by CountrySection 02 · Recommended routes & airlines

Tuzla has its own airport — Tuzla International (TZL), served almost exclusively by Wizz Air — but the most efficient route depends on where you are flying from. For most EU delegates, Sarajevo International (SJJ) is the best-connected option, followed by a ~3 h ground transfer (see Section 03). Below are the recommended routes for the four core consortium countries.

✈️

Search & book your flightsUse these tools to find your personal best connection to Tuzla (TZL) or Sarajevo (SJJ)

💡 On FlightConnections.com you can click on any airport (e.g. TZL or SJJ) to see all direct and connecting routes available from your city. On Skyscanner use "Everywhere" as destination to spot the cheapest one-stop options. Both tools are free and independent.

🇩🇪

GermanyDirect & cheapest connection · Wizz Air to TZL

FastestDirect flights to Tuzla (TZL)

Wizz Air operates seasonal direct flights from Berlin Brandenburg (BER), Dortmund (DTM), Hamburg (HAM) and Memmingen (FMM, “Munich West”) to TZL — typically 2–4 weekly each (verify dates on wizzair.com/timetable). Flight time ≈ 1 h 40 m.

AlternativeVia Sarajevo (SJJ)

From Munich (MUC) or Frankfurt (FRA), Lufthansa flies daily to SJJ (~1 h 45 m). From Vienna (VIE), Austrian Airlines operates the same route. Continue by ~3 h bus to Tuzla via Centrotrans / Trans Turist Tuzla.

🇪🇸

Spain1-stop to Sarajevo · or Ryanair + Wizz combo

RecommendedMadrid / Barcelona → Sarajevo (SJJ)

1-stop options from MAD / BCN to SJJ (no non-stop service):

• Via ViennaAustrian Airlines · total ≈ 7 h
• Via Munich / FrankfurtLufthansa · total ≈ 7–8 h
• Via IstanbulTurkish Airlines · total ≈ 8–9 h (often the cheapest)
• Via RomeITA Airways · total ≈ 8 h

Budget comboRyanair → Memmingen / Dortmund + Wizz Air → TZL

Ryanair flies daily from Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Málaga and Sevilla to Memmingen (FMM) and from several Spanish cities to Dortmund (DTM). Both airports have direct Wizz Air flights to TZL. Allow a 4–6 h layover at the German hub since they are separate tickets (no through-checked baggage).

🇵🇹

PortugalSame playbook as Spain · slightly longer

RecommendedLisbon / Porto → Sarajevo (SJJ)

No direct service to either Bosnian airport. Best 1-stop routes from LIS / OPO to SJJ:

• Via Frankfurt / MunichLufthansa with TAP Air Portugal code-share · ≈ 8 h
• Via ViennaAustrian Airlines · ≈ 8–9 h
• Via IstanbulTurkish Airlines · ≈ 9–10 h (often best price from Portugal)
• Via RomeITA Airways · ≈ 9 h

Budget comboRyanair → German hub + Wizz Air → TZL

Ryanair flies from Lisbon and Porto to Memmingen (FMM), and from Porto to Dortmund (DTM). Connect with a direct Wizz Air flight to TZL. Plan a generous 5–8 h layover in Germany (separate tickets).

🇷🇴

Romania1-stop via Vienna / Istanbul · Wizz from Cluj or Bucharest

RecommendedBucharest (OTP) → Sarajevo (SJJ)

1-stop options from Bucharest Otopeni (OTP) to SJJ:

• Via ViennaAustrian Airlines · total ≈ 5 h
• Via IstanbulTurkish Airlines · total ≈ 6 h

Wizz Air routeCluj / Timișoara / Bucharest → German hub → TZL

Wizz Air operates flights from Cluj-Napoca (CLJ), Timișoara (TSR) and Bucharest Băneasa (BBU) to Memmingen (FMM) or Dortmund (DTM), both with direct Wizz Air service to TZL. Build a 5–8 h layover as the two legs are separate tickets.

Local tipFrom Cluj-Napoca direct to SJJ?

No direct flight exists between CLJ and SJJ. The most efficient option from Cluj is connecting via Vienna with Austrian Airlines (often the most reliable 1-stop). Alternatively, fly Wizz Air Cluj → Dortmund/Memmingen → Tuzla.

🚕

Step 1 · Airport → Sarajevo Bus Station

~25 min · taxi or shuttle

From SJJ take a taxi or airport shuttle to the Sarajevo Bus Station (Autobuska stanica) — the city's main intercity hub for departures to Tuzla. Open in Google Maps.

🚌

Step 2 · Bus Sarajevo → Tuzla

~3 h · ≈ 27 KM (13–18 €)

Entry Requirements & Airport TipsSection 07 · Passport, visa & border information for B&H

Bosnia & Herzegovina is not a member of the EU or the Schengen Area. Entry rules differ from those in other European countries. This section summarises the most relevant information for delegates arriving from the SYSTEMEU consortium countries. Always confirm with your national embassy or the B&H Ministry of Foreign Affairs before travelling.

🇪🇺 EU Citizens (DE, ES, PT, RO)

  • Citizens of all EU member states (including Germany, Spain, Portugal and Romania) may enter B&H without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
  • A valid national ID card or passport is accepted at the border. An expired or damaged document will be refused — check the expiry date before travelling.
  • Passport validity: B&H border authorities typically require your passport to be valid for the duration of your stay. There is no official "6-month rule" for EU nationals, but a passport expiring within weeks of your trip may cause delays — it is strongly recommended to travel with at least 3–6 months remaining.
  • No advance registration or border card is required for EU citizens.

🛂 At the Airport (TZL or SJJ)

  • Passport stamp: B&H border police will stamp your passport on entry and exit — this is normal. The stamp records your entry date and is important for calculating your 90-day stay.
  • Border crossing card: Visitors are no longer required to fill in a paper entry/exit card at most crossings, but you must register your stay with local authorities within 24 hours of arrival. Hotels handle this automatically — if you are staying privately, you must register at the local police station.
  • Customs: B&H is not part of the EU Customs Union. You may bring personal items, laptops and standard conference equipment without issue. Large amounts of cash exceeding 10,000 KM (≈ 5,000 €) must be declared.
  • SJJ → Tuzla ground crossing: The road from Sarajevo to Tuzla passes entirely within B&H territory — no border crossing is involved.

⚠️ Non-EU Delegates & Special Cases

  • Non-EU consortium partners or guests (e.g. from Ukraine, Western Balkans, UK, USA, or outside the EU) should verify their visa status via the B&H visa information page.
  • UK citizens: Following Brexit, UK nationals may still enter B&H visa-free for up to 90 days with a valid passport. A national ID card is not accepted — a full passport is required.
  • Western Balkans countries (Serbia, North Macedonia, Albania, etc.): citizens of these countries have their own bilateral agreements with B&H — generally visa-free or with a valid national ID. Check your specific country's agreement.
  • If your passport has stamps from Kosovo, be aware that B&H does not officially recognise Kosovo — this has not historically caused refusal of entry for EU citizens, but it is worth being aware of.

🏥 Health & Travel Insurance

  • European Health Insurance Card (EHIC / S1): The EHIC does not apply in B&H. Private travel insurance with medical cover is strongly recommended for all delegates.
  • B&H has public hospitals and clinics in Tuzla; the largest is UKC Tuzla (University Clinical Centre). For non-emergency care, the hotel concierge can recommend private clinics with English-speaking staff.
  • Vaccinations: No specific vaccinations are required to enter B&H. Standard up-to-date EU vaccination schedules are sufficient.
  • Emergency number in B&H: 124 (ambulance) · 122 (police) · 123 (fire).

⚠️ Important — always verify before you travel: The information above is a helpful summary for SYSTEMEU delegates. Entry rules, visa policies and border procedures can change at short notice.

Always confirm requirements with your national embassy or the B&H Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Check at least 2–4 weeks before departure to avoid any problems at the airport or border crossing.
